My name is Mallory Long and I am a senior at the University of South Carolina earning my bachelors of science in psychology with a minor in neuroscience. In December 2017, I will be Graduating with Leadership Distinction in Research.

My whole life I have always been fascinated with the notion that our brain is the very essence of our being. The idea that this complex interconnected mass of circuits is the driving force behind our ability to experience life continuously amazes me. Over the past four years, I have had the opportunity to kindle my desire to learn more about the intricacies of the brain throughout my undergraduate journey.

My love for neuroscience grew immensely during the summer of my junior year. I was provided the opportunity to conduct neuroscience research at the University of South Carolina’s School of Medicine. For the past year and a half I have been working as a research assistant in a lab that strives to aid in the pursuit of unraveling the underlying mechanisms involved is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).   My research experience challenged my understanding of how scientific research is conducted and has transformed my way of thinking in a number of ways.  I have learned that research demands the need to find balance between creative and critical thinking. In order to advance forward in your life you must embrace the fears that are holding you back. Finally, I have learned to be able to connect and apply what I have learned with in the classroom as well as beyond the classroom.

Ultimately, my experiences here at the University of South Carolina have solidified my goal of one day earning a PhD in neuroscience. I strive to continue conducting research the rest of my life in hopes to pursue my passion of conducting research that could have the potential to positively impact humanity.

In my portfolio I highlight the details of how my experiences at the University of South Carolina have transformed me throughout the duration of my undergraduate career. These insights encompass a number of my experiences I have had within the classroom as well as beyond the classroom and how they worked together to help me grow. My three key insights are:

After my Key Insights, you will find my Leadership section.  In this section, I applied what I have learned over the years and developed a theoretical plan to reform current prevention and diagnostic protocols for concussions in student athletes at my high school Alma Mater,  Lexington High School.
